Are We Fluff Enough? The News of the Year!
The picture above may not look like much but it represents a lot of hard work and for me it is a picture of a wonderfully exciting part of our future...
I'm sure you're aware that part of our mission as a business is to re-use post-consumer and other waste materials in a useful, meaningful and stylish way. In the seven years since I started the business we have gone from recycling one or two cashmere jumpers a week to well over a quarter of a tonne of jumpers a month. This is all very commendable but it has always worried me that we weren't using every bit of the cashmere we bought, so for a long time we've saved our small bits of cashmere waste for 'Kate's harebrained project'. We have huge piles of bags squirreled away in garages and corners of the studio waiting for what happened this Tuesday. Oh boy was I excited...
To give a bit of context I have dreamed for a long time of a non-woven fabric made from our waste and have, with Graham's help, been researching possibilities for years. It's been tough. Graham has helped but even he began to doubt whether this dream could become a reality as he began to drown in cashmere pieces every time he came to the studio.
In the last 6 weeks, with the help of Wrap, we have found a company in the north of England who can weave - or needle-felt actually - just the type of magic we've been searching for! The journey is only just beginning but I honestly feel that now we can become a truly zero, or perhaps negative, waste business.

I’d love to see a boxy type of cardigan, probably about hip length. I think all the names that have been suggested are great fun.

I wanted to use CASHMASH, but it has been suggested, so how about ‘CASHMIRACLE’???
I also think a large ‘wrap’ so suitable for all those useful times?
Its gorgeous! Someone has already suggested Flash which is a great name or something incorporating your name Kate….Kate’s Flash! I too would love to see a simple gilet and let the colours speak for themselves, also a small purse or bags with recycled leather handles.
Looks wonderful. I would love to see this fabric in a gilet or waistcoat with pockets, maybe a jacket and I could see it as indoor slipper sock with leather sole.
I quite like the name Mush – Mere or just Cash Mere.
Gorgeous fabric, clever in needle felting. My name would be Flash, for felted cashmere. I would love to see it in a gilet, and also lined coat, jacket or skirt. Cloche hat, too.
I love the idea of the new fabric and can’t wait to see it transformed into something lovely. I suggest the name “sprinkles”.
A simple jacket for me please or a wrap.
Cashfelt or Cashfeel and yes a gilet as the different colours would work so well over black trousers.

This looks fabulous. I’d love a gilet (with pockets). How about Cashmere Jazz, or Flec as suggested names?
Cashmush is suggested. You said yourself you had mooshed up the material so what about “cashmoosh” as a name. My favourite garment is a wide boxy waistcoat that goes on top of everything including long tunics. I would love to see you produce a waistcoat/tabard in different cashmoosh colours.
This fabric would make a fabulous winter coat. I live in very windy Orkney and although I love ponchos they are a bit impractical in the wind. So a long coat would be great but would also be good as a tailored jacket.
They would of course need lined but that would also help keep the shape of the very soft fabric.
The only name that comes to mind is a bit daft—CASHMASH :-)
That fabric is beautiful Kate. I could see it as a doctors style bag with antique bronze clasp, with all those colours it would be a bag to wear with every winter outfit!
